Whether you’re an adult or a child, there’s nothing better than playing at the playground. It provides your kids with an incredible opportunity to let off some steam, burn some energy, and have a great time with their friends.

But what are some of the fun games to play at the playground? The truth is that there are lots of fun games to play at the playground. Some of them include four square, capture the flag, duck duck goose, Simon says, hide and seek, follow the leader, find your shadow, hide and shake and many more.

We decided to make your work easier by coming up with a list of the top eight fun and fair games for children to play while visiting the local playground.

Read on to learn our recommended games and how to play them.

1. Tag Football

If your kids love sports and playing football, tag football might be a great game to play at the playground.

As a variation of the popular game you played as a kid, tag football is just like regular soccer and many other sports since it’s fun, requires teamwork, and can even get competitive.

When you play tag football, there are two goals, one on each end of the playground. Each team will have a “football” that consists of an old sock stuffed with newspaper and tied by the toe.  The objective is to get your football into the goal across the field without using your hands or arms.

Children often use old socks stuffed with newspaper to play tag football.

When you play tag football, there’s no set number of players and teams.

It’s a very casual game that makes for great fun in the playground arena. If you have more kids than there are on one team, don’t worry, as you can always make another team or just add more players to each team.

The only real rule to tag football is that no member of a team can touch the other team’s football. When a member of one team touches another team’s football, that player is eliminated and has to sit out for a certain amount of time before rejoining play.

2. Four Square

Just like tag football, four square requires very little to no equipment at all. The game is played just like you’d imagine and involves players rotating around the square when it’s their turn.

When you play four square, there are two teams, with each player having space in the four-square court. Players then compete to get into the middle of the court by tossing the ball up and trying to hit it against the wall to bounce back into one of his or her empty spaces.

There are really no “rules” as to how many players can be on each team or what kind of ball is used for play, but it’s recommended that the object used for playing must be soft and safe. This way, everyone can enjoy the game without getting hurt.

When it’s not someone’s turn, they must sit in their assigned square and wait for the ball to come to them.

3. Duck, Duck Goose!

If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining game that requires very little space and minimal skills, duck duck goose will definitely do the trick.

Duck duck goose is played just like its name suggests by having one player be “it” while everyone else forms a line on their knees with hands behind their back.

The player who is “it” will walk around the line of kids tapping each child on the head, saying, “duck.” The objective is to move as fast as possible so that you’re not one of the ones tapped and instead try to get up before it’s your turn to be called by “it.”

If you’re tapped by “it,” you become the next player to be “it.”

Duck Duck Goose can involve as many kids as there are on the playground.

When you play duck duck goose, there really isn’t a set number of kids that can participate in the game as long as there’s one extra person than players. This allows for some fun with how many times a child might get tagged before they’re finally able to avoid “it” for a change.

4. Simon Says

If your kids are on the younger side or if it’s just one of those days where you want to watch them have some fun without using too much energy, Simon says is an excellent game to play at the playground.

If you want your kids to play without spending too much energy, Simon Says is an excellent option.

It’s played by having players do as Simon says, which means that you have to do whatever the leader tells you.

This is a simple game similar to duck, duck goose but doesn’t require as much energy or skill. It’s good for kids who are still learning how to follow directions and can be played by small groups of players as well as large groups.

When you play Simon says, there is no set number of players that can participate in the game. The main thing is to ensure that everyone knows what to do at the same time, so they don’t get left behind or out of place.

5. Red Rover, Red Rover!

Another game that can be played with a lot of kids is Red Rover. This is an exciting game where players will line up on one side of the playground and extend their hands out to the other team.

The objective is for each player in the opposing teams to try and get across while avoiding getting tagged by anyone from the opposing team. If the opposing team tags them, they’re out of play.

Only a small group can play at one time with no more than one or two lines on each side. This is a great game to play during recess to get kids up and moving around for a change of pace from the usual running and jumping games.

There can be as many participants on each team as there are players, and the material that’s used for making these teams can vary depending on age.

There is no limit to the number of players on each team as long as everyone has a partner that they’re playing together with.

6. Hide and Seek

If the playground doesn’t have a lot of open space for kids to run around, hide and seek might be the perfect game.

It’s played by having one kid try to hide themselves from the other players while they count. When they say, “Ready or not, here I come,” players will try and find them. The player who is found first wins and gets to hide next.

Hide and seek is a perfect game, especially when the playground features lots of equipment pieces and structures.

When you play hide and seek, it’s good for the kids to play in pairs or small groups of 3-4 at one time. This way, there are fewer distractions for the person who is hiding as well as a smaller chance that they might get lost if there are a lot of kids running around.

It is always good for older players to count so that younger kids can learn about numbers and counting.

Also, make sure to look out for the safety of all the children playing. If they’re getting too far away from one another or they’re not paying attention to their surroundings, it may be time to call the game and start over.

7. Hide and Shake (Variation of Hide and Seek)

If you’re looking for a variation on hide and seek, then try playing hide and shake. This is a game that requires fewer players than the other games mentioned in this article. It’s perfect when you don’t have too much time or many kids to play with.

The game starts when the leader states, “hide and shake!”  Players then go off in different directions while trying to find a good place to hide. When they’re ready, they will start shaking whatever it is that they’re hiding under or behind. This way, other players can find them.

When you play hide and shake, it’s best for the kids to only play in pairs or small groups of 3-4 at one time.

This is a game that involves very little preparation, and it’s easy for kids of all ages to learn how to play.

Another great game for kids to play during recess is jack or skip-it. This is a game that involves very little preparation, and it’s easy for kids of all ages to learn how to play.

8. Jack or Skip

It doesn’t take much room either, so it can be played in small spaces as well as larger areas. To play it, all you need is a rubber ball and two pieces of string. You can also use something soft such as a sock or shoelace instead of a string.

When kids are playing, they will throw their ball at the base of the pole. If they manage to knock down any jacks, then those jacks are out of play. If the ball lands on a jack that was already knocked down, it is considered a success.

It’s just like jacks, but with the added benefit of making use of any extra time before recess or after school comes to an end.

Final Word

We hope you and your family have enjoyed this list of fun games to play at the playground.
